Leveraging Summer: Propelling Your School Forward for a Successful Academic Year

Congratulations to all the educators out there for completing the 2023-2024 school year!  Now that summer has arrived, many educators and administrators shift their focus from day-to-day teaching to planning and preparation for the upcoming academic year. While summer break offers a well-deserved respite, it also presents a valuable opportunity to engage in professional learning and curriculum planning that can significantly impact school success in the fall. 

There is something so powerful about the opportunity to plan a course of action for the school year while free from the daily responsibilities of running a school.  In my own experience, there is something about the long sunny days and warm weather that gets the wheels turning in a way that is often not possible the rest of the year!  As a school leader, I always cherished summer for the opportunity it afforded me to think clearly about my goals and priorities for the upcoming school year, to thought partner with folks for longer stretches of time that didn’t need to fit into a 45 minute period or be interrupted by an unforeseen circumstance with a student, and to map out my entire year of professional development (yes, my entire year!) in ways that supported the vision and mission of the school and that year’s priorities.  It always felt amazing to start the year in September with my year-long plan complete, knowing that I could make adjustments along the way as needed.  

I encourage all of my educator friends and colleagues this year to certainly enjoy all the fun that summer has to offer while also leveraging summer to propel your school forward for a successful 2024-2025 school year!
